New York and New Jersey Chapter Celebrates New York's Heritage of Pride 2007
Eduardo Cividanes

The Heritage of Pride March commemorating the Stonewall riots of 1969 took place Sunday, June 24, 2007.

The Stonewall riots were a series of violent conflicts between New York City police officers and groups of gay and transgender people that began during the early morning of June 28, 1969, and lasted several days. Also called the Stonewall Rebellion or simply Stonewall, the clash was a watershed for the worldwide gay rights movement, as gay and transgender people had never before acted together in such large numbers to forcibly resist police.

This year’s participation included a Verizon float for a second year in a row along with participation from Verizon Wireless under the direction of the NY/NJ Chapter of Globe of Verizon. Verizon Wireless discounts were distributed to the crowds estimated at over 1 million spectators and with floats from many other corporations.

In 2008 the latter two events will take place on June 29.

These events are organized for and on behalf of all lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals and groups, and all others who support the struggle for the liberation of these communities.

In the spirit of Stonewall, Heritage of Pride welcomes the participation of all, regardless of age, creed, gender, gender identification, HIV status, national origin, physical, mental or developmental ability, race, religion or sexual orientation.

VERIZON AWARDS
$38,000 WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT GRANT TO
LONG ISLAND GAY AND LESBIAN YOUTH

Bay Shore, NY, July 17, 2003 -- Verizon Foundation has awarded a $38,000 grant to Long Island Gay and Lesbian Youth (LIGALY), a not-for-profit agency for gay and lesbian teens and families, to support a workforce development program. The program, based at the new David Bohnett CyberCenter at LIGALY's Community Services Center in Bay Shore, will provide technology and career skills to the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) community.

Verizon's grant to LIGALY will help the GLBT community bridge the digital divide through computer and technology training, helping them keep pace in an ever-changing job market. However, LIGALY's program is a unique service because it specifically targets the GLBT community and provides safety in obtaining computer and technology-related job skills and training in a time when homophobia and discrimination against gays still exits. LIGALY's program not only offers job training and retention skills to GLBT people seeking employment, but also offers employers sensitivity training on how to create safer workplaces to ensure that GLBT people won't leave their jobs because they feel unsafe. These services are complemented by job fairs, mentoring and shadowing programs, and a specialized internet-based employee-employer recruitment and matching program.

Verizon's funding helps the GLBT community, an underserved and underprivileged population that suffers from lower quality education and harassment in high school, disproportionately higher school drop-out rates, discrimination in the workplace, and homophobia in job-placement services. "Verizon's grant helps LIGALY prepare GLBT people overcome life-long disadvantages through computer and technology training," says David Kilmnick, LIGALY's Executive Director and co-founder.

Verizon's funding of LIGALY comes from a highly competitive, state-wide grant process of 330 applicants. LIGALY is one of 14 organizations throughout the state, and the only one in Suffolk County, to receive the grant. Judi Schillaci, Verizon's Director of Community Affairs for Long Island, says, "This grant will reach an underserved population in our region, and help them to obtain technology education and employment opportunities. Verizon is proud to be a partner in that effort."
