History and Accomplishments to Date

GLOBE, the result of the merger of Gays and Lesbians for Cultural Diversity (GLCD), of the old NYNEX, and Gays and Lesbian Bell Atlantic Employees (GLOBE) of the pre-merger Bell Atlantic, has a long and notable history, as corporate-sponsored Employee Resource Groups are concerned. We are proud of our history, and share it with you in this space.

1989
GLCD began as a "Hotline" number and a small social group in New England Telephone.
1993
A New York Chapter of GLCD was formed and held its first meeting in White Plains, NY.
Bell Atlantic gave official recognition to GLOBE as an Employee Resource Group (ERG).
First GLOBE chapter, Washington Metro, established.
1994
In October, GLCD officially presented to NYNEX its proposal to extend domestic partner benefits to both gay and straight employees.
GLOBE establishes a Speaker's Bureau.
GLOBE becomes a member of the consumer Marketing Multi-Cultural Board of Advisors.
GLOBE begins discussions for achieving Benefits parity.
GLOBE helps Bell Atlantic win the phone system contract for the Human Rights Campaign Fund (HRCF).
1995
In March, GLCD began a mentoring program with the lesbian and gay youth at the Harvey Milk School.
GLOBE*Link Program created.
GLOBE becomes a partner in Bell Atlantic's new Affinity Marketing Program, Community Threads.
GLCD sponsored gay and lesbian youth from 47 New England high schools to march in the Boston Gay Pride Parade.
Open Mind/Open Door program launched.
GLOBE articles in Let's Talk HR instituted.
GLCD along with other members of the NYNEX Diversity Consortium, worked with Corporate Contributions to develop the NYNEX Diversity Scholarship Program.
In October, NYNEX announced extension of benefits to same-sex domestic partners, effective January 1, 1996.
1996
GLOBE partners in the establishment of Diversity Management Training.
GLCD and NYNEX Corporate Philanthropy awarded our first college scholarships to gay and lesbian students residing within the NYNEX region. These scholarships were awarded for the 1996-1997 school year.
GLOBE participates in AIDS Ride in both Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia, PA.
GLOBE sees a membership increase of 100%.
1997
GLCD members conduct a workshop at the "Mentors and Models: Supporting our Gay and Lesbian Youth" Conference sponsored by CANDLE (Community Awareness Network for a Drugfree Life and Environment, Inc.
GLOBE secures Bell Atlantic's sponsorship of ENDA; Ray Smith testifies before Congress in support of ENDA.
GLOBE's fight for benefits parity continues.
In August, NYNEX and Bell Atlantic merge into a new Bell Atlantic.
GLOBE partners in the development of a Leadership Development Template.
GLOBE and GLCD obtain corporate sponsorship of Gay Pride.
Major Corporate support for the Richmond AIDS Walk is secured.
Discussions begin for the merger of GLCD and GLOBE (Gay, Lesbian or Bisexual Employees [of pre-merger Bell Atlantic])
GLCD is honored at the Empire State Pride Awards Dinner and presented with the Community Leadership Award for landmark organizing in the workplace.
Bell Atlantic extends Domestic Partnership Benefits to all management employees in the pre-merger Bell Atlantic.
1998
Bell Atlantic extends Domestic Partnership Benefits to all associates (non-management employees) in the pre-merger Bell Atlantic.
Numerous June Pride events/parades throughout the Bell Atlantic footprint.
Rainbow flags are displayed in the workplace during Pride Week, for the first time.
GLOBE and GLCD vote to merge.
GLOBE places a Pride display in Bell Atlantic headquarters at 1095 Avenue of the Americas.
New Jerey chapter is established.
Kate Bornstein and Nancy Nangeroni make history by being the first transgendered keynote speakers at an employee event, the GLOBE Annual Meeting, held at a corporate headquarters -- 1095 Avenue of the Americas.
1999
GLOBE re-establishes Washington Metro chapter.
GLOBE initiates discussions to expand the EEO nondiscrimination policy to cover "gender variance."
GLOBE launches website on the Corporate Wide Web.
Pilot workshop for the Leadership Development Program for GLBT employees conducted.
Conducted 1st Out@Work event for Equality Begins At Home (EBAH) Week
Accepted Gay Pride Award from Manhattan Borough President in honor of Bell Atlantic
Bell Atlantic trials, in NYC, an advertisement campaign targeting glbt audience
2000
Participated in numerous June Pride events and parades throughout the Bell Atlantic footprint.
Mounted rainbow flag displays in workplaces throughout the Bell Atlantic region during Pride Month, confirming the corporation's commitment to our communities to all customers, employees, contractors, vendors, and visitors to our work sites.
Participated as a Corporate sponsor of the Millennium March on Washington (MMOW) where our booth was featured in a story by The Washington Post.
Secured Domestic Partner Medical Benefits in the new Verizon-West region for both associates and management employees providing DPB throughout our entire corporation.
Worked on 'Transgendered' to be included into the new corporation EEO policy.
Participated as co-sponsors in Human Rights Campaign yearly dinner in Boston and the national banquet in Washington DC.
Participated with Verizon as co-sponsors of the ESPA Annual Dinner and GLAAD Media Awards Dinner in New York.
Participated in the Bell Atlantic Diversity Ad Campaign featuring representatives from all Employee Resource Groups.
Held Speaker's Bureau presentations at multiple venues including: Potential college hires in Middleton, Mass., Seven Yellow pages locations throughout the footprint for "Celebrate Our Differences Day", Lynchburg, Va. RSSC during Pride month, Diversity Opportunity Day at Chesapeake Complex in Silver Spring, Md.
Participation by members in the Raleigh, NC to Washington, DC AIDS Ride V benefiting programs at the Whitman-Walker Clinic and Food and Friends in DC.
Assisted members with resolving diversity issues in the workplace.
Proposed through local CWA 1105 leadership ideas for "Bargaining Demands" concerning Domestic Partnership Benefits and the GLBT community.
2001
Participated in the GenderPAC held May 18-20, 2001 in Washington, DC. The conference was also cosponsored by the Verizon Foundation. Our GLOBE booth was well attended.
Participated in National Lobby Day May 21, 2001 in Washington, DC. We were able to lobby our representatives in congress for passage of Hate Crime Legislation.
Produced Pride Month displays distributed to 22 original Verizon national locations (31 final locations with the help of Real Estate and GLOBE volunteers).
Coordinated 45 Pride Flag displays throughout Verizon during Pride Month.
Participated in the Verizon Consumer Advisory Board panel discussion on trans-inclusive language. As a result, the full Advisory Board later moved to recommend that our Code of Business Conduct should include under "Non-Discrimination," "Harassment," and "Responding to Harassment:" gender identify or expression is specifically enjoined from being a basis for discrimination at Verizon.
Participated in "The Laramie Project," a theatrical production at the Roanoke Pride-in-the-Park celebration in September honoring Danny Overstreet.
Coordinated Christmas Teddy Bear Drive benefiting New York's Harlem Hospital Pediatric AIDS Unit.
Increase overall membership from 329 to 444, an increase of 25.9%.
Expanded our national coverage to the former GTE footprint. New members in: California (9), Florida (23), Indiana (3), Michigan (1), North Carolina (1), Oregon (1), Puerto Rico (1), Texas (14), and Washington (2).
Incorporated a Florida Chapter.
Assisted members with workplace issues.
Interacted with Labor Relations concerning GLOBE associates' issues.
Responded to inquiries and feedback from members and the general population.
2003
GLOBE represented Verizon at the Orange County, California’s Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) 25th Anniversary event held in April. During this event, Verizon was recognized for its sponsorship and attendance as well as networking with PFLAG.
GLOBE formed and promoted a Verizon team to walk in a fundraising event benefiting AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Team members (along with matching foundation funds) raised almost $30,000 for APLA.
GLOBE worked with the Verizon Foundation to award a $38,000 grant to Long Island Gay and Lesbian Youth (LIGALY), a not-for-profit agency for gay and lesbian teens and families, to support a workforce development program. The program will help the the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) community bridge the digital divide through computer and technology training, helping them keep pace in an ever-changing job market. In addition to job training and retention skills to GLBT people seeking employment, LIGALY's program will also offer employers sensitivity training on creating a safer workplaces for GLBT, trying to ensure people won't leave their jobs because they feel unsafe. Job fairs, mentoring and shadowing programs, and specialized internet-based employee-employer recruitment and matching program, complement these services. "Verizon's grant helps LIGALY prepare GLBT people overcome life-long disadvantages through computer and technology training," says David Kilmnick, LIGALY's Executive Director and co-founder. This grant will reach an underserved population in our region, and help them to obtain technology education and employment opportunities. Verizon is proud to be a partner in that effort."

GLOBE organized a teddy bear drive to benefit sick children and children affected by AIDS either directly or indirectly during the holiday season by partnering with Public Affairs, the Dimock Community Health Center in Boston and the Barbara Bush Center in Maine. GLOBE collected over 1,100 stuffed animals and beanie babies from employees though out New England, New York and New Jersey. GLOBE distributed the new teddy bears to the Dimmock Community Health Center, the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital at Maine Medical Center, Girls Inc., a battered woman's shelter in Boston, and the pediatric wings of Boston area hospitals.

GLOBE formed an alliance with Verizon's Marketing Support to participate in Gay Lesbian Bisexual and Transgender focus groups.
GLOBE members partnered with Public Affairs to participate in the Verizon corporate initiative, Season’s Readings assisting with a book fair in Boston.
GLOBE joined members of Public Affairs team on the Long Beach Pride and Festival Verizon float to reach out to the 150,000 attendees. Working with Retail Markets, Globe members distributed giveaways and provided product information at the Verizon booth. GLOBE representatives provided participants with information on job opportunities at Verizon, as well.
GLOBE continued its Gay Pride Rainbow Flag Project, aimed at fostering a better understanding of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community. Members of the GLOBE Speaker’s Bureau travel across Verizon’s territory speaking to groups, answering questions, and addressing issues.
GLOBE welcomed two new chapters: Texas and Western Pennsylvania.
